Abstract
The paper examines the significance and necessity of value-oriented education in the contemporary educational system. It argues that education should not be limited to the transmission of textbook knowledge or preparation for careers, but should also develop moral, social, ethical and human values among learners. The paper highlights the growing crisis of values in family, social and political life, including declining tolerance, honesty, social harmony and concern for human welfare. It discusses different classifications of values proposed by thinkers such as Plato, Parker and Spranger and emphasizes the importance of integrating both internal and external values in education. The paper also reviews the views of the Radha Krishnan Commission, Kothari Commission and National Policy on Education regarding value development. Previous studies on moral and ethical values are discussed, including research relating values with intelligence and socio-economic status. The paper further emphasizes the role of teacher education programmes in developing value-based education and establishing a value-oriented society.
